DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0500Z March 12, 2021
SMOKE: Mid-Atlantic/Southeast... A light density plume of smoke, attributed to a significant amount of seasonal fire activity along with a few possible wildfires, was visible extending from Georgia/eastern Alabama northeastward to North Carolina to Nova Scotia. Florida... A wildfire in the southern Everglades was spreading a light density plume westward for about 100 miles over the Gulf of Mexico. A thick density plume was found immediately downwind of the wildfire and a moderate density plume extended about 70 miles to the west over the Gulf of Mexico. Midwest/Central Plains... Areas of light density smoke from numerous agricultural burns were detected over parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. Mexico/Western Gulf of Mexico/Far Southern Texas... A rather large area of primarily light density smoke was detected over eastern and southern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, the western Gulf of Mexico, far southern Texas, and a portion of the Pacific south of Mexico. More localized patches of light density smoke were embedded within the thinner density smoke especially along and off the southern coast of Mexico. This smoke was linked to seasonal fire activity across Mexico with some contribution from oil rig flaring in the Bay of Campeche. Konon THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
