DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z March 19, 2021

SMOKE:
Montana, Canada...
In Central Montana two large light density smoke plumes attributed to
wildfires were observed moving in a northerly direction crossing into
southern Canada.

Arizona...
In southeastern Arizona a light to moderate density smoke plume attributed
to probable wildfires was observed moving southeast. north

Southeast Texas
Scattered fires along the southeast coast of Texas were seen emitting
light to moderate density smoke plumes Southeast.

Florida, Mexico, Gulf of Mexico, Eastern Pacific Ocean...
A large region of light to moderate density smoke was observed over most
of Coastal Eastern and southern Mexico extending out across the Gulf
of Mexico, through most of Florida, and ending off the east coast of
Florida. Light density smoke was also observed over parts of Southern
Mexico and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The plumes appears to consist of
smoke from heavy seasonal burning in the region, gas flaring activity,
as well as urban pollution/aerosols. Agricultural burning activity was
observed throughout Mexico causing a large number of light to moderate
density smoke plumes.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
