DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z March 20, 2021

SMOKE:
Northern Ohio River Valley/ Central and Southern Plains...
A large region of remnant light density smoke likely attributed to
yesterday’s agricultural burning activity over the Central/Southern
Plains was observed over parts of the Northern Ohio River Valley. Light
density smoke from agricultural burning and seasonal fire activity was
observed over parts of the Central/Southern Plains especially Oklahoma
and Texas in this morning’s GOES visible satellite imagery.

South Florida...
A small region of agricultural burning was observed just to the south of
Lake Okeechobee in South Florida, however cloud cover over parts of the
region made smoke analysis difficult in this morning’s GOES visible
satellite imagery.

Southern/Southwestern Coastal Mexico and Eastern Pacific Ocean...
A large region of light density smoke was observed over Coastal
Southern/Southwestern Mexico to several hundered miles offshore out
over parts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean in this morning’s GOES visible
satellite imagery.

DUST:
A region of light density Saharan dust was observed off the coast of West
Africa out over parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean in this morning’s
GOES visible satellite imagery

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
