DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z March 21, 2021
SMOKE: Central Plains, Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma... Widespread agricultural fires produced numerous light to heavy density smoke plumes primarily located in Oklahoma and Texas. Smoke plume movement was primarily to the north in this region. Texas... Scattered fire activity in the north-central and southeastern portions of the state was emitting light to moderate density smoke moving southward on the coast and to the north in central Mexico. Fire activity was more concentrated and plumes were observed moving quickly southward on the Texas Gulf coast and far southernmost tip of Texas. Northern Ohio River Valley... A region of remnant light density smoke likely attributed to yesterday’s agricultural burning activity was observed over parts of the Northern Ohio River Valley. Texas , Mexico, Gulf of Mexico, Eastern Pacific Ocean... A large region of light to moderate density smoke was observed over southern Texas most of central Mexico, coastal eastern and southern Mexico extending out into the Gulf of Mexico. Light density smoke was also observed over parts of Southern Mexico and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The plumes appears to consist of smoke from heavy seasonal burning in the region, gas flaring activity, as well as urban pollution/aerosols. Agricultural burning activity was observed throughout Mexico causing a large number of light to moderate density smoke plumes. Eglin THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
