DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z March 21, 2021

SMOKE:
Northern Ohio River Valley/Central and Southern Plains...
A region of remnant light density smoke attributed to yesterday’s
widespread agricultural burning activity over the Central and Southern
Plains was observed over parts of the Northern Ohio River Valley. Light
density smoke progressing mainly northward from agricultural burning
activity was also observed over most of Eastern/Central Oklahoma in this
morning’s GOES visible satellite imagery.

South Texas, Mexico, Western Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Pacific
Ocean...
A broad region of light density smoke was observed over far South Texas,
most of the Western Gulf of Mexico, and also over most of the Mexican
States of Tabasco and Veracruz. A second large region of light and
moderate density smoke was also observed over parts of coastal Eastern,
Southern, and Southwestern Mexico to several hundred miles offshore out
over parts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean in this morning’s GOES visible
satellite imagery.

DUST:
West Africa/Eastern Atlantic Ocean...
A region of light density Saharan dust was observed off the coast of
West Africa and out over parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean in this
morning’s GOES visible satellite imagery.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
