Central and Southern Appalachians/Carolinas…
An area of possible leftover thin density smoke which is pooled along a
frontal boundary and visible between breaks in cloud cover was seen this
morning extending from a portion of the central and southern Appalachians
eastward across the Carolinas and offshore over the Atlantic. This smoke
was likely from recent seasonal fire activity occurring in the South
Central and Southeastern U.S. and northern and eastern Mexico.

Southern and Southeastern Texas/Southern Louisiana/Eastern and
Southeastern Mexico/Western Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche…
An area of leftover thin density smoke attributed to seasonal fire
activity occurring mainly in Mexico and southern and southeastern Texas
was visible across eastern and southeastern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche,
the western Gulf of Mexico, and portions of southern and southeastern
Texas and southern Louisiana. Cloudiness in parts of this region
and farther to the northeast over the South Central and Southeastern
U.S. limited additional information on the smoke in satellite imagery. A
moderately dense swath of smoke was embedded within this large area
primarily over the Bay of Campeche.

Southern Mexico/Northern Central America/Pacific south of Mexico and
Central America…
Patches of leftover thin density smoke from ongoing seasonal fire activity
in southern Mexico and Central America was visible over portions of
far southern Mexico, northern Central America, and the Pacific south of
Mexico and Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
