Central U.S./Great Lakes Region…
Leftover thin to moderate density smoke from recent rounds of intense
seasonal burning and a few embedded wildfires across portions of the
Central U.S. was seen this morning extending from eastern Kansas and
eastern Oklahoma to the northeast to the western and central Great
Lakes region reaching as far as Lake Superior and the southern part of
Ontario. The thickest portion of the smoke stretched from near St. Louis
northeastward over Illinois to northwestern Indiana close to or just to
the south and southeast of Chicago. Satellite imagery this morning also
showed newly forming smoke plumes across a broad part of the Central
U.S. with more fire activity.

Southern Mexico/Northern Central America/Pacific south of Mexico and
Central America…
A large region of thin density smoke from the ongoing seasonal fire
activity in southern Mexico and Central America was visible this morning
over much of southern Mexico and Northern Central America and extending
well offshore to the south over the Pacific. Within this large region
of thin density smoke were smaller patches of moderately dense to even
thick smoke which emanated from fires in southern Mexico and spread to
the south off the coast.

DUST:
A large mass of rather significant Saharan dust was seen well east of
the Caribbean islands closer to and over the western coast of Africa.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
