Midwest/Ohio Valley/Eastern U.S./Atlantic...
A large region of remnant light to moderate density smoke from recent
widespread fire activity over the central U.S. was observed over most
of the Midwest and Ohio Valley. Light density smoke was also observed
over parts of the Mid-Atlantic and also off the coast of the Carolinas
out over parts of the western Atlantic.

Lower Mississippi Valley/Southeast U.S...
Numerous light density plumes from seasonal agricultural fires were
detected across the region. The plumes were moving northeast over
the Lower Mississippi Valley and primarily to the east over the
Southeast U.S.

Florida...
Agricultural burning activity was observed around the Lake Okeechobee
region where light density smoke was detected moving to the west.

Mexico and Eastern Pacific...
A broad region of light and moderate density smoke from continued
widespread seasonal fire activity was observed along coastal western
and southwestern Mexico to several hundred miles offshore out over
parts of the Pacific Ocean. Light density smoke was also observed
over the Mexico states of Tabasco and Veracruz. Moderate to thick
density smoke was observed in the vicinity of fire activity over
parts of the region especially in western Mexico.

DUST:
Nevada...
A narrow plume of blowing dust was detected moving southward over the
central part of the state.

Atlantic...
A region of light density Saharan dust was observed over parts of the
central and eastern tropical Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
