DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1720Z April 8, 2021
SMOKE: Eastern U.S./Atlantic... Mostly Light with some moderate density smoke was seen stretching from across the eastern U.S. across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region, most of the eastern U.S. and through the Coastal Atlantic region extending offshore approximately 1,150 miles off the southeast coast from around South Carolina. Within this larger mass of thin density smoke was a patch of moderately dense smoke around south West Virginia, east Kansas, east Tennessee, western Virginia, western North Carolina, and eastern South Carolina. This smoke was from recent days of concentrated seasonal fire activity and a few embedded wildfires which were present across the Central U.S. and southeastern U.S. Mexico, Gulf of Mexico, Central America, Eastern Pacific Ocean... A large region of light density smoke was observed along coastal eastern and southern Mexico as well as coastal Central America extending out into the Gulf of Mexico. Light density smoke was also observed over parts of Southern Mexico and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The plumes appears to consist of smoke from heavy seasonal burning in the region. Light density smoke was observed from offshore drilling platforms in SW Gulf of Mexico progressing northwest in direction. DUST: Atlantic, Caribbean Sea... A large light density Saharan dust plume covers most of the central and eastern tropical Atlantic but is edging closer to the eastern Caribbean Sea.. Eglin THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
