DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1710Z April 9, 2021

SMOKE:
Eastern U.S./Atlantic,Canada...
A large light density plume was detected stretching across the east
coast from
southeast Canada down to South Carolina, and extends offshore
approximately 1800 miles over the open Atlantic Ocean. This smoke was
from recent and current days of concentrated seasonal fire activity and
a few embedded wildfires across area.

Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Pacific...
A large area of light density smoke was observed along the northeastern
Mexico coast extending out into the Gulf of Mexico.  Light density smoke
was also observed over parts Pacific coastal Mexico extending westward
over the Pacific Ocean. The plumes consist of smoke from heavy seasonal
burning in the region. .

DUST:
Atlantic...
A large light density Saharan dust plume covers most of the central and
eastern tropical Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
