DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200z April 22, 2021

SMOKE:
Western Atlantic Ocean and Eastern United States...
An area of light density smoke, from fire activity over the Central and
Southeastern United States, was seen extending northeast along Atlantic
Coastal areas from the Carolinas northeast to just east of New Jersey.

Southern Mexico, Northern Central America and the southern Gulf of
Mexico….
An area of light density smoke, from fire activity over Mexico and Central
America was seen extending from western Cuba and just offshore southwest
Florida west through the southern Gulf of Mexico and into southern Mexico
and northern Central America.

DUST:
Western Caribbean Sea….
An area of Saharan Dust was seen over the western Caribbean Sea from
Honduras north east to just east of the Yucatan Channel.

Northern Mexico, New Mexico and Arizona….
An area of blowing dust was seen extending northeast from White Sands
New Mexico.  Further to the west, another area of blowing dust were seen
from portions of northwest Mexico extending northeast into Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
