DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z April 24, 2021

SMOKE:
Northern New York/New England/Southeastern Canada…
A remnant patch of thin to moderately dense smoke was observed moving to
the east across southeastern Ontario, far southern Quebec, Lake Ontario,
northern New York, and over New Hampshire. This smoke was believed to be
from a relatively large fire which was burning yesterday in northeastern
lower Michigan to the west of Lake Huron.

Gulf Coast Region/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Mexico/Central
America/Pacific south of Mexico…
The large mass of primarily thin to moderate density smoke from the
ongoing significant seasonal fires in Mexico and Central America was seen
this morning covering much of southern and eastern Mexico, northwestern
Central America, a portion of the Pacific south of Mexico, the Bay
of Campeche, much of the Gulf of Mexico, southern and southeastern
Texas, the southern portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama,
and the Florida panhandle. The smoke may extend farther to the east and
northeast farther over Florida and the southeastern parts of Georgia and
South Carolina but cloud cover there prevented additional information
on the smoke in satellite imagery. Embedded areas of thicker smoke were
seen around some of the larger fires especially in southern Mexico. A
relatively thick area of smoke was also visible moving east across the
south central Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
