DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0235Z April 25, 2021

SMOKE:
Kansas...
A great amount of seasonal fires were seen over southern and eastern
Kansas producing thin density smoke plumes moving generally to the north
and northeast.

Far southern Texas/Florida/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Mexico/Central
America/Pacific south of Mexico/Cuba/Bahamas...
The ongoing significant amount of seasonal fires occurring in Mexico,
Central America, and Cuba were responsible for a huge area of thin to
moderate density smoke covering central, southern, and eastern Mexico,
the northwestern part of Central America, a portion of the Pacific south
of Mexico and Central America, the Bay of Campeche, much of the Gulf of
Mexico, far southern Texas, the Florida peninsula, western Cuba, and the
northern Bahamas. Embedded areas of thicker smoke were seen around some
of the larger fires especially in southern Mexico. A relatively thick
area of smoke was also visible moving east across the south central
Gulf of Mexico. Thinner density smoke appeared to extend as far as the
northern Bahamas and off Atlantic Ocean.

DUST:
Central-Eastern Arizona/New Mexico...
Gusty winds from the southwest were kicking up significant blowing dusts
which emanated primarily from sources in Apache County, central-eastern
Arizona, and Montosa Mountain and White Sands National Monument of New
Mexico. The dusts then spread quickly to northeast across border between
Arizona and New Mexico, and southeastern New Mexico, respectively.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
