DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z April 29, 2021

SMOKE:
Western and Central Atlantic Ocean...
A large region of remnant light to moderate density smoke likely
attributed from widespread seasonal fire activity over parts of the
Central and Southeastern U.S.
and also from Mexico’s widespread seasonal fire activity was observed
over parts of the Western and Central Atlantic Ocean. Light to moderate
density smoke was observed off the coast of the mid-Atlantic as well as
over Bermuda and to the east of the this region in this morning’s GOES
visible satellite imagery.

Southern United States, Mexico, Central America, Gulf of Mexico,
Southwestern Caribbean Sea, and Eastern Pacific Ocean...
A broad region of light and moderate density smoke attributed
from the widespread seasonal fire activity in Mexico was observed
over parts of the Northern Gulf Coast and Southern U.S. including
parts of Southern/Southeastern Texas and also over parts of Southern
Louisiana. Moderate to thick density smoke was observed over a large part
of the Northwestern and Western Gulf of Mexico, the Bay of Campeche,
across coastal Eastern Mexico, over Southern Mexico, and over parts of
Central America. Light to moderate density smoke was also observed over
parts of the Southwestern Caribbean Sea as well as over parts of Southern
and Southwestern Mexico, and out over parts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
