DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z May 8, 2021

SMOKE:
Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Southern Plains and Mexico….
A large area of mostly light density smoke, from ongoing fires over
Mexico and Central America, was extending from just offshore the east
coast of Florida west and northwest through the Gulf of Mexico and into
the Southern Plains of the United States and then extending south through
Mexico and offshore western Mexico into the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
Included in this area is an area of moderate density smoke along the
western coast of Mexico extending northwest to near the southern Baja.

DUST:
West Coast of United States….
An area of blowing dust from Asia was seen just offshore the coast of
central and northern California extending northwest and then west through
the northern Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
