DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z May 21, 2021

SMOKE:
Canada/Eastern US…
Moderate to thin density smoke from wildfire activity in central
Manitoba over the past few days extends eastward across Ontario,
Quebec, and Newfoundland and out towards southern Greenland before
turning southward over the Maritime Provinces, the Northeastern CONUS,
and the Mid-Atlantic before being dragged out into the Atlantic off
the North Carolina shore. Thanks to cloud cover over eastern Canada,
it is uncertain if this is one continuous area or if there are two or
the remnant areas of smoke. Smoke from these wildfires was also observed
moving southwest at the surface, with likely smoke observed moving south
across eastern Montana.

Mexico/Central America...
A large area of light to moderate density remnant smoke was observed
across the western Gulf of Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, the southern
Yucatan Peninsula, and northern Central America. The thickest smoke
resides between the eastern Bay of Campeche and Honduras. Another area of
smoke is observed along the southern coast of Mexico. Numerous individual
smoke plumes were also seen along the west of Mexico, with the thickest
smoke observed across western Guerrero.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea...
A light density Saharan dust was seen blanketing the eastern Caribbean,
with the western edge extending west-southwestward from southeastern Cuba,
western Jamaica, and eastern Honduras.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
