DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z May 21, 2021

SMOKE:
Central/Eastern Canada...
A long, narrow light to moderate density plume from the previous days’
wildfires in Manitoba extended from central Manitoba, northern Ontario,
and through central Quebec to the Atlantic coast.

Atlantic...
Another long, narrow light to moderate density plume also from previous
days’ wildfires in Manitoba was detected wrapping around a large low
pressure area located east of Bermuda. The plume extends from the
Newfoundland coast southwestward to just south of Nova Scotia, about 100
miles east of Cape Hatteras, to a few hundred miles northeast of the
Bahamas.

Mid-Atlantic/Southeast...
A remnant light density plume sourced a few days ago from the Manitoba
wildfires was located from south-central Pennsylvania to the Carolinas.

Pacific Northwest/Western Canada...
A light density plume from yesterday’s scattered wildfires and seasonal
burns in the area was detected over eastern Washington and Oregon, far
southeastern British Columbia, and across central Alberta.

Mexico/Central America...
A large light density plume from continuing seasonal agricultural burns
was found from west-central Mexico to southeastern Mexico into the
southern Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
