DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1450Z May 23, 2021

SMOKE:
Southwest North Atlantic Ocean, Florida, eastern Gulf of Mexico….
An area of mostly light density smoke, believed to be from the fires over
the past week over south central Canada, was extending from portions of
the southwest Atlantic Ocean west through Florida and into the eastern
Gulf of Mexico and then extending northwest to just offshore of the
central Gulf Coast.  Included in this area was an area of moderate density
smoke over the Southwest North Atlantic Ocean southwest of Bermuda.

Texas, Mexico and New Mexico….
Ongoing fire activity over Mexico and Central America was producing an
area of  smoke that was extending from central Mexico and the offshore
tropical eastern Pacific Ocean north into portions of central and western
Texas and southeast New Mexico.  An area of moderate density smoke was
included within this area over coastal southwest Mexico.

DUST:
Central Canada….
An area of unknown aerosol, possibly blowing dust from portions of the
southwest United States mixed with an area of light smoke, was extending
from northern Manitoba west through central Saskatchewan into central
Alberta.

Caribbean Sea….
An area of Saharan Dust was seen over portions of the southeastern
Caribbean Sea and extending west into portions of the western Caribbean
Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
