DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0001Z June 8, 2021

SMOKE:
Western Quebec and Central Ontario to the Upper Midwest and Central
Plains States….
The narrow axis of light density smoke from earlier today that is believed
to come from the fires over the southwest United States was seen widening
and further extending from portions of western Quebec through southern
Ontario, the Upper Midwest, into the Central Plains of the United States,
and then moving south over Texas and all over the eastern coast of Mexico.

Southeastern Arizona, Texas, Western New Mexico...
The Mescal and Telegraph wildfire complexes in Southeastern Arizona
and the Doagy Fire in western New Mexico were emitting large amounts of
light to heavy density smoke progressing northeast into New Mexico and
then the plumes combine as they are swept north over the Central Plains
reaching Canada and southeast extending throughout most of Texas and
over much of Mexico.

Eastern New England and extending offshore….
An area that is believed to be light smoke of unknown origin extended
further east into the Atlantic Ocean.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic Ocean to the southeastern Caribbean Islands…
An area of blowing dust was seen extending west through the Tropical
Atlantic Ocean through the southeastern Caribbean Islands and into the
southeastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
