DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0141 June 11, 2021

SMOKE:
Arizona, Western New Mexico, Utah, Central/North-Central/South-Central
U.S., South-Central Canada, Mexico, Pacific south of Mexico...
Wildfire complexes in Southeastern Arizona, western New Mexico, and Utah
continue to emit light to moderate density smoke that blankets much of the
North-Central to south-Central U.S. and a potion of the south-Central
Canada. This smoke has combined with the ongoing seasonal fires in
Mexico. A large area of light to moderate density smoke is covering much
of northern Mexico and a portion of the Pacific south of Mexico.

Utah...
In northern and eastern Utah two light to heavy density smoke plumes
attributed to wildfires were moderate moving northeast into southern
Montana in the north and Colorado in the east.

Ontario...
In central Ontario several light to moderate density smoke plumes
attributed to wildfires were observed moving east.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic Ocean to the southeastern Caribbean Islands…
Thick Saharan Dust was observed extending from Africa across the tropical
Atlantic Ocean across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern half of
the Caribbean Sea. This Saharan Dust Layer was moving westward across
the Caribbean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
