DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0001Z June 17, 2021

SMOKE:
CONUS/Baja California/Northern Mexico…
A very large area of predominantly light to moderate-density smoke
currently covers the majority of the Contiguous United States, with the
exception of the northwestern, Great Lakes and New England regions. The
smoke originates from wide spread fire activity across the southeastern,
central and southwestern U.S., in addition to northwestern Mexico. Pockets
of heavy-density smoke can be seen over the Dakotas traveling eastward,
and over eastern Colorado, western Oklahoma and northern Texas where
the smoke is moving toward the south. The Johnson Fire in Gila National
Forest/western New Mexico, in addition to the Pinnacle, Mescal and
Telegraph fires in Gila and Graham Counties in southeastern Arizona
was still actively burning this afternoon and evening, releasing
moderate-to-heavy density smoke toward the west-northwest.

DUST:
Eastern-Central Caribbean Islands...
Light-to-moderate concentration Saharan dust is seen traveling westward
across the Caribbean, affecting most of the Caribbean Sea and surrounding
islands up to Jamaica and eastern Cuba.

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
