DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z June 20, 2021

SMOKE:
East Coast/Atlantic...
A detached light density plume was detected extending from just northeast
of the Bahamas to near Bermuda. A narrow, light density plume extended
from south of Long Island to the Tennessee Valley. This smoke was likely
from previous day’s agricultural burns and a few wildfires across the
eastern half of the U.S.

Mid/Lower Mississippi Valley...
A light density plume from previous day’s seasonal agricultural
burns was
detected over this region.

Arizona/New Mexico...
Wildfires in these two states were spreading a light density plume from
central Arizona eastward across most of the southern half of New Mexico.

California..
A wildfire near Big Sur was spreading a light density plume off to the
northeast. A detached light density plume from previous day’s wildfires
was detected over the Sacramento Valley.

Oregon/Idaho...
Light to moderate density plumes from wildfires across central Oregon
covered a large part of the state with a light density plume extending
eastward into southern Idaho.

DUST:
Caribbean...
A light plume of Saharan dust was detected covering most of the Caribbean
Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
