DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1646Z June 28, 2021

SMOKE:
Ontario, Minnesota...
In western Ontario a large area of mostly light to moderate density
smoke attributed to wildfires was observed moving southwest over northern
Minnesota. This area also spread east across Ontario.

California...
In northern California a light to heavy density smoke plume attributed to
wildfires were observed spreading northwest in direction over southwest
Washington.

Southwestern U.S...
A large region of light to moderate density smoke emitted from the
Rafael, Horton, and Bear wildfire complexes in Arizona was observed
this evening. Thick density smoke was observed progressing southwest
from both fire complexes. Smoke from the wildfires are progressing over
most of Arizona, northwestern Mexico, and southern California.

Northwest Territory...
In southwestern Northwest Territory a light to moderate density smoke
plume attributed to wildfires were observed spreading generally north
in direction.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic Ocean to the southeastern Caribbean Islands…
Thick Saharan Dust was observed extending from Africa across the tropical
Atlantic Ocean across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern half of
the Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
