DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1650Z July 2, 2021

SMOKE:
Eastern Alaska/Northern U.S./Central and Northwestern Canada
Several wildfires in northern California, British Columbia and central
Canada are seen emitting large quantities of smoke across those regions,
while also impacting downwind areas to the east-southeast of those
sources. As a result, a very large plume continues to cover areas
extending from northern California, into Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
Montana , the Dakotas, Nebraska, northeastern Oklahoma, northern Missouri,
Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin, while blanketing the majority
of central Canada including southeastern British Columbia, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, and Ontario. Pockets of moderate-to-high density smoke are
found in northern California and central Oregon, southeastern British
Columbia, northern Manitoba, most of Ontario, and northern Minnesota. A
second large plume covers central-eastern Alaska, extending eastward
across northern Yukon and into the Northern Territories.

Dust:
Central-eastern Caribbean...
Light Saharan dust can be found spreading westward across the
central-eastern Caribbean ahead of Hurricane Elsa.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
