DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z July 5, 2021
SMOKE: Canada/Alaska/eastern half of the CONUS/Atlantic Ocean... Wildfire activity continues across central-eastern Alaska, southern British Columbia, eastern Manitoba, and western Ontario, releasing thick smoke plumes across the region and further impacting vast areas downstream. As a result, most of Alaska and Canada (with the exception of Nunavut), and the eastern half of the Contiguous United States are under the influence of a very large smoke plume, which is seen extending further to the east across the northwestern Atlantic. Pockets of moderate-to-heavy density smoke are found over central-eastern Alaska and central Yukon, southern British Columbia, southwestern Alberta, and Ontario, in addition to the upper U.S. Midwest and areas just west of the Appalachian mountains. The majority of the smoke is dispersing eastward following the high-level atmospheric flow. Northern California... Wildfires in Shasta and Siskiyou counties are emitting heavy density smoke, which is dispersing toward the northeast over south-southeastern Oregon and into central Idaho. Southern Gulf of Mexico... A stagnant light density smoke plume is seen over the southern Gulf of Mexico and the states of Veracruz and Tabasco. Smoke is also seen originating from oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche, and dispersing towards the north. WS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
