DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z July 5, 2021

SMOKE:
Canada/Alaska/northern and eastern half of the US:
Wildfire activity continued across central-eastern Alaska with moderately
dense to dense smoke moving east across Yukon and Northwest Territories
and into far western Nunavut and steaming north across the northern
sections of British Columbia, Alberta,Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Wildfires over southern British Columbia eastern Manitoba and western
Ontario are emitting moderately dense to dense smoke stretching across
southern Canada, northern US into the Central Plains and effecting a
large section of the eastern half of the United States. Light smoke
stretches as far back into eastern Kansas/Nebraska and as far south as
northern Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia and up and down the
east coast into southeast Canada. A more dense area is positioned over
eastern Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, western/central Pennsylvania
through western/central New York and into Quebec and farther northern

A sliver of light smoke most likely from wildfires across Canada can be
seen stretching along the Nova Scotia coast line and just off the Maine
and New Hampshire coast. Smoke may extend farther, but clouds obscure
the view.

dense smoke pushing northeast into section of northern California,
northwest Nevada and into southern/eastern Oregon. Very thin smoke may
stretch farther northeast into southeast Washington and Idaho.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
