DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2300Z July 5, 2021
SMOKE: Eastern Alaska/Northwestern, Southern and Eastern Canada/Northern and Eastern half of the US... Wildfire activity continued across eastern Alaska with moderate-to-heavy density smoke moving east across Yukon and Northwest Territories and into western Nunavut. Wildfires are also persisting across southern British Columbia with several smoke plumes coalescing and dispersing toward the east into southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Persisting wildfires are also found across southeastern Manitoba and western Ontario with moderate-density smoke dispersing toward the southeast, adding to a large area of smoke from previous day fires that covers most of the eastern U.S. and New England. That large plume is moving eastward following the higher level atmospheric flow. Additional pockets of light-density smoke originated from wildfires in Canada and the northern U.S. are found over the northwestern and central Atlantic. Finally, the Salt Fire in Shasta County in Northern California continued to emit moderate-to-heavy density smoke, with the plume dispersing toward southern Oregon and further into Montana and the Dakotas. Mexico... A light density and mostly stagnant smoke plume was seen covering the state of Vera Cruz, while oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche could be seen releasing light density smoke from gas flaring activity toward the northwest. Dust: Eastern Caribbean... Light Saharan dust could be seen traveling westward into the Eastern Caribbean region. WS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
