DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z July 20, 2021

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/CONUS...
Smoke from widespread wildfire activity continues to cover the majority
of North America, with the exception of the southern U.S., the southern
Great Basin, and areas along the Pacific coast. The highest concentration
smoke is seen over northeastern California, northwestern Nevada, eastern
Oregon and Washington, northern Idaho, Montana, eastern Wyoming, the
Dakotas, northwestern Nebraska, and across much of southern Canada,
from central British Columbia to eastern Quebec, in addition to the
Great Lakes region. Additional areas of light-to-moderate density
smoke include central Alaska, northern Canada, and the southern Great
Plains. Large wildfire clusters in the western U.S. and British Columbia
show smoke plumes dispersing predominantly toward the northeast, whereas
major wildfires along the Manitoba/Ontario border show plumes dispersing
toward the south and further into the Great Plains. Areas south of the
Great Lakes, northern Appalachians and New England show smoke traveling
eastward.

DUST:
Eastern Caribbean...
Light density Saharan dust could be seen traveling westward across the
eastern Caribbean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
