DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0022Z July 29, 2021

Canada/U.S...
The expansive area of varying density smoke remained this afternoon. The
smoke is attributed to significant wildfire activity in central,
south central, and southwestern Canada, along with the northwestern
and western CONUS, continues to be observed covering an area extending
from the Pacific Northwest into and across central Canada, where the
fire activity in east-central Manitoba and western Ontario adds to the
area of smoke. From there most of the smoke moves southeastward across
the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic and then turns northeastward across
Nova Scotia and Newfoundland before moving on out across the northern
Atlantic. Some smaller amounts of smoke are moving south from the Great
Lakes across the Great Plains and the southeastern CONUS. Cloud cover
over the far northern Canada and Alaska precluded further analysis.

DUST:
Bahamas/Greater Antilles/Bermuda…
A thin layer of Saharan Dust was observed across Jamaica, Hispaniola,
eastern Cuba, Turks and Caicos, the southeastern Bahamas, the Sargasso
Sea, and northeastward to just east of Bermuda.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
