DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z July 29, 2021

Canada/U.S...
An expansive area of varying density smoke was observed extending
from wildfire activity in the western CONUS into southern and central
Canada. From there, further wildfire activity is helping to extend
that region into much of the eastern half of the CONUS. Then, a cyclone
over the far eastern Canada is drawing smoke east off the Mid-Atlantic
coast and then northeastward into Newfoundland. There is also some
light remnant smoke across northern Quebec that extends north across
Baffin Island into Baffin Bay. The source of this smoke is a little less
certain, as there cold be cross-polar contributions. The same could hold
true for smoke analyzed over northern Canada, with Russia as a possible
source region. The thickest smoke resides over southern BC and Alberta,
central Manitoba into the Dakotas and the northern Great Lakes, and from
the Dixie Fire north-northwest to near Mount Shasta.

DUST:
Belize/Cuba/Bahamas/Bermuda…
A band of thin Saharan Dust was seen extending northeastward from the
Yucatan peninsula across central Cuba and the central Bahamas and into
the open Atlantic Ocean and over Bermuda.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
