DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1930Z July 30, 2021
Canada/U.S... The expansive area of varying density smoke remained this morning and persisted through the afternoon. The smoke is attributed to significant wildfire activity in central, south central, and southwestern Canada, along with the northwestern and western CONUS. Smoke continues to be observed covering an area extending from the Pacific Northwest into and across almost all of Canada, where the fire activity in east-central Manitoba and western Ontario adds to the area of smoke. Following a ridge, light smoke covers the NW US, all of Canada and the high plains of the US before diving down over the Midwestern US, Mississippi valley, Great Lakes and then marching east across the Ohio Valley, southeastern US, and mid-Atlantic region where it exited into the western Atlantic. Light smoke extended northeast in the Atlantic Ocean off of a majority of the east coast and moving all the way towards the coast of Newfoundland. Medium density smoke covered most of the western US and Canada as well as the high plains and mid-west. A very large amount of very dense smoke was also observed in western Canada moving to the east where it accumulated due to additional fire activity. Very dense smoke was also observed over south-central Canada and scattered throughout the high plains of the US. DUST: Lesser Antilles/Central America/South America… A band of thin Saharan Dust was seen extending over the islands and into Central America and northern countries of South America. Levine THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
