DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z August 3, 2021

SMOKE:
North America…
Continued wildfire activity across the western CONUS, western Canada,
and central Canada is contributing to an expansive area of varying
density smoke that extends from Alaska to off the eastern coast of
North America. The most dense smoke resides over the Pacific Northwest,
the southern half of Canada from BC into western Ontario, and across
the Yukon and Northwest Territory. Some thick remnant smoke was being
drawn south-southeastward across the Central Plains. Thick smoke is
also being produced by individual wildfires across far southeastern
Northwest Territory, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and western Ontario. The
McCash, River Complex, Monument, McFarland, and Dixie Fires in northern
California were also producing very thick smoke (PyroCBs) that was moving
north from the parent fire.

Carolinas…
Agricultural fire activity was observed across central North Carolina. The
light smoke emanating from this fire activity was moving off toward the
southwest, with some smoke entering northern South Carolina.

Kansas/Oklahoma…
More isolated agricultural burning activity was observed across the
Central Plains. The mainly light smoke from this activity was observed
moving southwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
