DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z August 6, 2021
SMOKE: Northern California/Northwestern U.S... Thick density smoke and pyro-cumulus clouds from the Dixie wildfire complex was observed in this evening GOES visible satellite imagery. Several other wildfires to the northwest and west of the Dixie wildfire were also observed over Northern California. Smoke from the wildfire activity was seen progressing off towards the northeast, north, and east into Oregon, Washington, North Idaho, Northern Montana, Northwestern Nevada, and Southern British Columbia Province. Moderate and thick density smoke was observed away from the large complex fire activity over most of Northern California, the Northwestern U.S., and off the coast of Oregon and California over parts of the Pacific Ocean this evening. Canada/United States/Western Atlantic Ocean... Wildfire activity across central, south central, and southwestern Canada along with the northwestern and western U.S. has created a large region of light, moderate, and thick density smoke seen in GOES visible satellite imagery. Light density smoke earlier today was seen covering nearly all of Canada and most of the U.S. with the exception of the Southeast and a portion of the Southwest. Thick density smoke was observed from wildfire complex activity in Southern British Columbia progressing northeast towards south central Canada. Thick density smoke was also observed over the northern and central U.S. Moderate density smoke was observed over the northern and central portion of the U.S. Smoke also extended well off the U.S. east coast across a significant portion of the Western Atlantic Ocean south of Greenland this evening. Eastern and Central Alaska/Northwestern Canada... Wildfire activity over parts of Eastern and Central Alaska, as well as the Yukon, and parts of the Northwest Territories was observed and responsible for a broad region of light to moderate density smoke covering most of Central Alaska and most of Northwestern/North Central Canada. Moderate to thick density smoke was observed in the vicinity and progressing away from the wildfire activity this evening. Dust: Northern Nevada... Blowing dust was observed in Northern Nevada in two areas progressing eastward in this evening’s GOES visible satellite imagery. Sambucci THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
