DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 7, 2021

SMOKE:
Canada/U.S...The extremely large area of varying density smoke attributed
to significant wildfire activity especially in central, south central,
and southwestern Canada and the western U.S. was seen this morning
covering much of Canada and the lower 48. Only a portion of western
Washington, northwestern Oregon, a sliver of the southwestern U.S.,
southern Texas, and a portion of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic region
were relatively smoke free. In Canada, cloud cover over part of British
Columbia and northern Alberta likely interfered with smoke detection
there. Thicker smoke was noted over California, Nevada, and southern
Oregon and extending to the east and northeast from there over the
Rockies to the western Dakotas as well as over portions of southwestern,
south central, and central Canada. Areas of moderate density smoke were
visible around the periphery of cloud cover over the central U.S. and
from southeastern Canada to over the Atlantic just south of Greenland.

Alaska/Northwestern Canada...
Cloud cover was fairly widespread across Alaska and northwestern
Canada which significantly limited fire and smoke detection in satellite
imagery. Some thin density smoke was visible between breaks in the clouds
along and off the northwestern coast of British Columbia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
