DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 9, 2021
SMOKE: U.S/Canada... The expansive area of varying density smoke remained this morning. The smoke is attributed to significant wildfire activity in central, south central, and southwestern Canada, along with the northwestern and western CONUS. Smoke continues to be observed covering an area extending from the Pacific Northwest into and across almost all of Canada, where the fire activity in east-central Manitoba and western Ontario adds to the area of smoke. Following a ridge, light smoke covers the NW US, much of Canada and the high plains of the US before diving down over the Midwestern US, Mississippi valley, Great Lakes and continues east across the Ohio Valley, southeastern US, and mid-Atlantic region where it exited into the western Atlantic. Light smoke extended northeast in the Atlantic Ocean off of a majority of the east coast and moving all the way towards the coast of Newfoundland. Medium density smoke covered most of the northern U.S. and southern Canada. A very large amount of dense smoke was also observed from northwestern U.S. and extended to the east over the central U.S. and southern Canada. DUST: Puerto Rico/Eastern and Southeastern Caribbean… A thin layer of Saharan dust was visible over the central and eastern portions of the Caribbean Sea and continued to move to the west.
