DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 14, 2021

SMOKE:
United States/Canada/Pacific off the west coast/Atlantic off the east
coast…
Numerous wildfires and some large wildfire complexes burning in central
and southern British Columbia of southwestern Canada and portions of
northern and central California, Oregon, Washington, northern Idaho,
and western Montana in the western U.S. were continuing to produce
significant quantities of smoke. A large mass of dense smoke was noted
across much of the far western and northwestern U.S. and southwestern
Canada with some of the moderately dense to thick smoke also spreading
to the west and southwest off the west coast. Areas of generally thinner
density smoke were visible over a good part of the remainder of Canada
and the U.S. with smoke also moving off the U.S. east coast and eastern
Canada well out over the Atlantic.

Alaska/Far Northwestern Canada...
A broad area of relatively thin density smoke probably attributed to
recent wildfire activity in Siberia was seen over portions of Alaska and
extending to the north and northeast across the Arctic Ocean and extreme
northwestern Canada. Cloud cover in the region though did interfere
with additional information on the extent and density of the smoke from
satellite imagery.

DUST:
The Saharan dust which had been seen in the Caribbean region was no
longer visible this morning. The Saharan dust which was visible in
satellite imagery was well east of the Caribbean over the tropical and
subtropical Atlantic to the west coast of Africa

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:
