DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0103Z August 24, 2021

SMOKE:
U.S./Canada/Pacific...
Large wildfires in the western U.S. and southwestern Canada continued to
burn today and were responsible for a large area of smoke seen across
portions of the U.S. and Canada as well as off the U.S. West
Coast. Denser smoke from the wildfires stretched eastward across
sections from California all the way into Iowa. The most dense areas
of smoke extended across northern California and into southern Oregon,
northern Nevada and southwest Idaho. Lighter density smoke extended off
the California coast and north into central and some parts of Oregon,
Idaho, Montana, south central Canada, across North Dakota, South Dakota,
Nebraska, Utah Wyoming and as far east as the Mid-Atlantic and moving
into the Northeast and reaching southern central sections of Quebec out
into the Atlantic south of Nova Scotia.

Northern Canada...
Thin density smoke was seen spreading to the east and across northern
parts of Canada from northern British Columbia and the Northwest
Territories to northern/central Ontario. The smoke may reach farther
east. Smoke was most likely sourced from fires burning in Siberia a few
days ago.

Cloud cover over much of the Lower 48 and Canada precluded further smoke
analysis today.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
