DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 28, 2021

SMOKE:
Northern Plains to the Western United States….Fires over the western
United States were continuing to produce a large area of smoke that was
extending from the Northern Plains southwest through the central Rockies
to most of the West Coast from central California north to Washington.
Within this area, the highest density smoke was over portions of central
and northern California to southern Oregon.

Northern Canada….An area of smoke, from fires over central and northern
Canada, was extending across northern Canada from northern Quebec west
to the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia.  Within this
area the highest density smoke was from near northern Quebec extending
southwest to northern Manitoba.

Eastern New England….An area of moderate density smoke, from the
fires over the western United States, was extending from portions of
the Atlantic Ocean just offshore Southeast Canada west to portions of
eastern New England.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea and Southwestern Atlantic Ocean….A large area of
Saharan Dust was seen over portions of the Southwest Atlantic Ocean
extending south through the eastern Caribbean Islands and into most of
the Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
