DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0001Z September 12, 2021

SMOKE:
Lower 48 of the U.S/Southern Canada/Atlantic off the East Coast of the
U.S. and Canada/Mexico/Gulf of Mexico…
Varying density smoke, primarily from the ongoing significant wildfire
activity over the western U.S. with smaller contribution from a few
wildfires in southern British Columbia and numerous daily smaller
seasonal/agricultural type fires in the central and south central U.S.,
was visible this evening covering most of the lower 48 states of the U.S.,
portions of southern Canada, the northern half of Mexico, the northern
Gulf of Mexico, portions of the Atlantic along and well off the east coast
of Canada and the U.S. A substantial part of this huge area of smoke was
moderate in density especially across virtually all of the central U.S.,
a portion of the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern U.S. regions, northern
Mexico, south central Canada, and also along a line from northern
California to central Montana. Cloud cover over eastern Washington,
northern Montana, and over the border into southwestern Canada prevented
detailed information on the extent and density of the smoke in these
areas in satellite imagery.

DUST:
Caribbean:
An area of thin density Saharan dust was seen spreading to the west over
the southern part of Hispaniola, Jamaica, the central Caribbean Sea,
and northern South America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
