DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 12, 2021

SMOKE:
Lower 48 of the U.S/South Central and Southeastern Canada/Atlantic off
the East Coast of the U.S. and Canada/Mexico…
Despite some reduction in the size and intensity of a number of the recent
significant wildfires occurring in the western U.S. and southern British
Columbia of southwestern Canada, sprawling coverage of smoke from these
wildfires continues to be seen in satellite imagery this morning. Smoke
of varying density stretches from just off the west coast of the U.S. and
western Mexico inland and to the east over virtually all of the lower
48 of the U.S., portions of south central and southeastern Canada, and
well off the east coasts of both Canada and the U.S. over the northern
and central Atlantic. Thick smoke extends from northern California across
southern Oregon and southern Idaho while a band of moderately dense smoke
extends to the east from there across the northern U.S. to the Great
Lakes region. In addition, a much larger batch of detached moderate to
thick density smoke covers western Mexico, part of the southwestern U.S.,
and a good portion of the central and eastern U.S., with some embedded
moderately dense smoke also extending to the east off the southeast
coast of Canada and the east coast of the U.S. over the western Atlantic.

DUST:
Caribbean/Yucatan Peninsula:
Very thin Saharan dust was barely visible this morning spreading slowly
to the west across the western Caribbean and over the Yucatan Peninsula.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
