DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2355Z September 12, 2021

SMOKE:
Lower 48 of the U.S/Atlantic off the East Coast of the U.S. and
Canada/Northern Mexico…
Wildfires in Northern California and Central-Southern Oregon regained
intensity this afternoon with heavy smoke plumes originating from those
areas and dispersing toward the northeast in the general direction of
Central Idaho and Southwestern Montana, and continuing eastward in the
form of light smoke reaching the Northern Great Plains and the Great
Lakes area. The south side of that large plume is intersecting another
major area of moderate concentration smoke that extends from Northern
Mexico, passing through Northwestern Texas and covering much of the
Southern Great Plains and areas east of the Mississippi River.. That
second plume is linked to previous days fire activity across the western
U.S. and widespread agricultural burning along the Mississippi Valley,
where particularly high concentration of fires are observed in eastern
Arkansas. The individual heavy-density smoke plumes from the agricultural
burning are dispersing toward the north-northeast, while the larger area
of smoke is traveling predominantly toward the Northeastern U.S. and over
the Northwestern Atlantic. One narrow section of heavier concentration
smoke is also seen stretching southeastward from Missouri and Arkansas
in the direction of Georgia and for approximately 300 miles over the
Atlantic waters.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
