DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1740Z September 13, 2021
SMOKE: Atlantic... A large light density plume from ongoing wildfires in the Western U.S. was detected off the Mid-Atlantic coast to just south of Newfoundland to not far southwest of Iceland. The plume becomes moderate and heavy density starting at the Mid-Atlantic coast to south of Nova Scotia. Continental U.S./Canada/Mexico/Pacific... A very large thin density, mostly detached plume covers a large part of the eastern 2/3rds of the U.S., a small part of south-central and southeastern Canada, northwestern Mexico, and over the open Pacific extending several hundred miles west-southwest of Baja California. Within this thin density plume, a moderate density plume was found extending from Kansas/Oklahoma, through the Midwest and Lower Great Lakes region, into the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, and to the Mid-Atlantic. Within this moderate density plume, a thick density plume was detected across parts of Kansas/Oklahoma, parts of the Midwest, and most of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Western U.S. ... Intense wildfires continue across northern and central California with smaller fires over the Pacific Northwest. A large detached thin plume from these wildfires covers the Northern Plains and parts of the Northern Rockies. Also detected were smaller thin to heavy plumes associated with two large wildfires complexes, one over northwestern California and another in the San Joaquin Valley. Konon THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
