DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z September 14, 2021

SMOKE:
Atlantic...
A long narrow thin to moderate density plume, leftover and detached from
wildfires in the western U.S., was detected from just off the Mid-Atlantic
coast extending east-northeast to just south of Newfoundland to a few
hundred miles southwest of Iceland.

Continental U.S./Canada/Mexico/Pacific...
A very large detached thin density plume leftover from western U.S.
wildfires covered most of the East Coast, the Ohio Valley, parts of the
Great Lakes region, sections of the Midwest, the Central/Southern Plains,
and the Desert Southwest, and northwest Mexico. This plume also extended
offshore west of Baja California for several hundred miles into the open
Pacific. Within this thin density plume, a moderate density plume covered
the Mid-Atlantic, parts of the Ohio Valley/Great Lakes region/Midwest, and
into sections of Kansas and Oklahoma.

Western U.S. ...
A number of ongoing wildfires were present across California, the Pacific
Northwest and parts of the northern Rockies. Most of thee fires were
producing small thin density plumes. Two large wildfire complexes, one
in northwestern California and the other in the San Joaquin Valley, were
producing significant light to heavy density plumes.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
