THROUGH 1740Z September 16, 2021
SMOKE: Eastern U.S. and Canada/Atlantic... A detached plume left over from the western U.S. wildfires was detected over the Mid-Atlantic and extended over parts of the northwestern Atlantic, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and to just south of Greenland. The plume was of thin density except moderate density just south of Nova Scotia to the southeastern part of Newfoundland. Western U.S. to Great Lakes... Ongoing wildfires in California and Oregon have spread a large thin density plume that covered parts of California and Oregon, the Great Basin, parts of the northern Rockies, the northern Plains and Midwest, and sections of the Great Lakes region. Within this thin density plume, plumes of moderate density was detected over western Oregon, parts of northern and central California and the Great Basin. This plume then extended east-northeast over southern Idaho, most of Wyoming, and the western part of the Northern Plains. Heavy density plumes are found in the immediate vicinity of one large wildfire complex over northwestern California, and another smaller complex in the San Joaquin Valley. Desert Southwest/Mexico/Pacific... A detached thin density plume originally sourced from wildfires over the western U.S. covers a small part of southern California/Arizona/New Mexico and a large part of northwestern Mexico and Baja California. DUST: Atlantic... A thin plume of Saharan dust was detected over the eastern Caribbean Sea. Konon THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
