DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0122Z September 17, 2021

SMOKE:
Western U.S. to Great Lakes, and Mexico/Pacific...
Very large coverage of smoke primarily due to the ongoing wildfires
burning in the western U.S. continued to be seen today extending from
over the far eastern Pacific off the U.S. west coast inland and to the
east over virtually all of the western and central U.S. and Within this
thin density plume, plumes of moderate density were detected over western
Oregon, parts of northern and central California and the Great Basin. This
plume then extended east-northeast over parts of Idaho, Wyoming, and
the western part of the Northern Plains. Additionally, moderate to heavy
density smoke was seen mostly near the source fires throughout the area.

Eastern U.S. and Canada/Atlantic...
A detached plume left over from the western U.S. wildfires was detected
over the Mid-Atlantic and extended over parts of the northwestern
Atlantic, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The plume was of thin density
except moderate density just south of Nova Scotia to the southeastern
part of Newfoundland.

DUST:
Atlantic...
A thin plume of Saharan dust was detected over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
