DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z September 19, 2021

SMOKE:
Southwestern U.S./Northern Rockies/Great Plains/Midwestern and
Northeastern U.S./Southern-Central Canada/Gulf of California...
With the exception of the Southeastern and Northwestern U.S. where there
is extensive cloud coverage this morning, light-to-moderate smoke is
seen over much of the remaining regions of the country, extending further
north over Manitoba and Ontario, south over the Gulf of California, and
east over the Atlantic ocean for more than 1,000 miles off the coast of
Virginia. Thick smoke from California wildfires is dispersing toward
the northeast creating a large corridor of moderate-to-high density
smoke stretching from the main sources in central-southern California to
central Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, passing through northwestern
Arizona, central-southeastern Nevada, southeastern Idaho, Wyoming,
southeastern Montana, and the Dakotas. Some moderate concentration smoke
from previous day fires in the Western U.S. and the Mississippi Valley
is also seen moving eastward covering areas around Lake Michigan, Ohio,
southwestern Pennsylvania, northern Western Virginia, western Maryland
and northern Virginia.

DUST:
Atlantic/Eastern Caribbean...
A large area of light-to-moderate Saharan dust is traveling westward
across the central Atlantic approximately 500 miles east of Barbados,
and could potentially reach the Eastern Caribbean islands in the next
several hours.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
