DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1631Z September 27, 2021

SMOKE:
Southwestern/Central U.S., and Mexico/Pacific...
The KNP Complex fire in the Sequoia National Park of southern California
continued to produce an area of light (with large areas of moderate to
thick) smoke extending from the Pacific off the U.S. west coast inland and
covers the western U.S., northern Mexico and continues inland where it is
probably combining with smoke from recent seasonal burning ending around
Missouri. A large area of moderate to heavy density smoke covered much
of California and extends northeast over most of Nevada and also travels
to the southwest approximately 540 miles over the Pacific Ocean. Several
wildfires were also observed over central Idaho and central-southern
Montana producing light to locally moderate smoke progressing mostly to
the northeast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
