DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z September 28, 2021
SMOKE: Western/Southwestern/Central U.S. and Mexico/Pacific... The large KNP wildfire complex in the Sequoia National Park of Southern California has resulted in a large region of moderate to thick density smoke. Moderate to thick density smoke was observed over a large region of Southern California as well as offshore out over the Pacific Ocean. Light to moderate density smoke was observed well offshore out over the Pacific Ocean as well as over most of the Southwest U.S. including New Mexico and Arizona as well as over Northwestern Mexico and the Gulf of California. Moderate to thick density smoke was seen as well over most of Nevada. Light, moderate, and thick density smoke was also seen over parts of the Northern Rockies and over the North Central U.S. Earlier today, moderate to heavy density smoke covered much of California and extended northeast over most of Nevada and also traveled southwestward approximately 540 miles over the Pacific Ocean and now has progressed further from these regions. Several wildfires were also observed over Central Idaho and Central/Southern Montana producing moderate to thick density smoke progressing towards the northeast this evening. Lower Mississippi Valley and Southeastern U.S... Widespread agricultural burning activity was observed in the Lower Mississippi Valley including Southeastern Missouri and Eastern Arkansas where light to moderate density smoke was seen progressing northeastward. Scattered agricultural burning emitting light to moderate density smoke was observed over parts of the Southeastern U.S. including Eastern Mississippi, Western Georgia, and Central/Southern Alabama this evening. Southwestern Gulf of Mexico/Southern Mexico... A region of light to moderate density smoke was observed over parts of Southern Mexico. Light to moderate density smoke from offshore drilling platforms was also observed over parts of the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico including the Bay of Campeche this evening. DUST: Eastern Caribbean including the Lesser Antilles... A region of light density Saharan dust was observed in the vicinity and to the west of Hurricane Sam over parts of the Lesser Antilles this evening. Northwestern Nevada... A region of blowing dust was observed in Northwestern Nevada progressing eastward this evening. Sambucci THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
