DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1450Z October 1, 2021

SMOKE:
Eastern United States, Central United States, Southwestern United States,
Western United States, northern Mexico, central and eastern Canada…
A large area of mostly light density smoke, from the wildfires over the
western United States and central Canada, extended from much of central
and eastern Canada south into the eastern United States and offshore
Atlantic Ocean and then further west through the central United States
and then southwest to the southwest United States and northern Mexico.
Within this area of smoke, moderate density smoke was seen over portions
of the Upper Midwest of the United States and then also over the central
Plains states.

Central Canada…
Fire activity over central Saskatchewan and Manitoba was producing an
area of moderate to high density smoke that was extending north through
northeastern Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba into the southeastern
Northwest Territories.

California….
Fires over south central California was producing a moderate to high
density area of smoke that covered much of south central California with
lighter density smoke extending offshore southern California.

DUST:
Eastern and Central Atlantic Ocean...
A large area of Saharan dust was seen over the Central and Eastern
Atlantic Ocean moving west and was just east of the eastern Caribbean
Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
