DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2320Z October 11, 2021

SMOKE:
Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Minnesota...
Smoke from wildfires along the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border continued to
impact the area, with moderate-to-heavy concentration plumes dispersing
toward the east while lighter density smoke extended further out toward
the southeast and into northern Minnesota.

Ontario/Pennsylvania/New York...
Smoke from previous days agricultural fires along the Mississippi
Valley is traveling northeastward over southern Ontario, northwestern
Pennsylvania and western New York.

Nebraska/Kansas/Oklahoma...
A pocket of very light density and mostly stagnant smoke was seen over
southern Nebraska, central Kansas and Oklahoma.

Southern Texas/Western Gulf of Mexico...
Light-to-moderate density smoke linked to previous days fires in the
southern U.S. and to gas flaring activity along the southern Gulf of
Mexico occupies most of the western Gulf of Mexico and southern Texas.

DUST:
California...
Blowing dust has intensified during the afternoon hours and was seen
covering most of the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. The dust
was dispersing predominantly toward the southeast extending over the
Pacific Ocean, northern Baja California and western Arizona.

Caribbean...
A thin density plume of Saharan dust was over the central Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
